Support London’s Built Environment Sector, Government Urged

Posted on: 6 Nov 2017

Design and construction professionals in London contribute a significant amount to the city’s GDP and to the UK’s performance in these industries as well.

That’s the finding of a new report from New London Architecture (NLA), with Construction Manager Magazine highlighting the key recommendations to come out of the document.

Among them is to ensure that firms based in the city continue to have access to top international talent once the UK leaves the EU and to focus on making London an affordable and desirable place to live and work in the long term.

The NLA also wants London mayor Sadiq Khan to be a strong advocate for the built environment sector, promoting the city’s firms as global experts and helping raise their profile.

NLA chairman Peter Murray commented: “It is vital that the industry works together to ensure we are not overtaken by other global cities.”

He added that this goes beyond simply training new talent, stating that politicians should concentrate on “protecting the hugely rich and diverse mix of cultures and skills that London currently enjoys”.

Earlier this month the organisation highlighted how construction firms carrying out projects in the UK’s capital need to be smarter about how they design homes for the city. The focus should be on building on brownfield sites, rather than looking to the green belt for extra land, deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills in London Jules Pipe told attendees at an NLA event.
